The Center for Methane Emissions Solutions (CMES) is deeply disappointed, though not surprised, by today’s action by the Trump Administration to delay compliance with the 2024 methane standards. This step is harmful to the environment and public health and is also shortsighted from an economic perspective.
EPA’s own analysis shows that postponing these protections will allow millions of tons of methane, nearly a million tons of volatile organic compounds, and tens of thousands of tons of other toxic pollutants to be released into the air—pollution that could have been prevented. This is simply unacceptable.
Methane emissions—often the result of leaks—represent lost product and lost revenue for industry. CMES member companies work hand-in-hand with oil and gas producers to identify and repair these leaks quickly and cost-effectively. Doing so protects operators’ bottom lines, strengthens our energy system, and creates good-paying American jobs.
We urge the Administration to reconsider this interim rule and allow the commonsense methane standards to move forward without delay.
